The Dalai Lama’s Five Lessons about Happiness
The Dalai Lama provided many powerful lessons over his lifetime, but few tips for knowledge have been as potent as the subject of happiness. For millions of people who are searching for happiness and contentment in their lives there are five lessons from the Dalai Lama that will provide a pathway to achieving happiness.
Be Your Own Master
The only person who can make you happy is yourself. There is no one on Earth that can provide you with happiness. You are in control of how happy you want to be which also applies to other feelings such as anger and sadness. Along with serving your community, you can generate happiness from within your own feelings. Inner peace is obtained by accepting the idea that true happiness can only be generated by you.
Material Possession only brings Temporary Happiness
The feelings you receive from buying or receiving material possessions is only a temporary one. In the end, trying to end your feelings of sadness by drinking alcohol or buying items that you have always desired only papers over the real unhappiness that you are experiencing. Once the brief spark of happiness derived from the material possessions pass, you will be back where you started and often poorer as a result.
Don’t Pray for Happiness
This is one of the tips for knowledge that may seem a little strange coming from the Dalai Lama. However, his lessons come in large part from his own personal experiences which include the terrible events that started in March, 1959 when the Communist Chinese came into his country. He was urged to pray to the Buddha for assistance and none came. As the Dalai Lama believes now that deities already provide people with the ability to create their own happiness and relieve their suffering.
Compassion & Secular Education Help You Reach towards Happiness
The combination of a secular education which frees people to learn without the shackles of religious tenants and compassion for fellow human beings provides an excellent path towards happiness. Finding compassion for those in need and combining it with an excellent education gives you the tools to help find the happiness within yourself.
Certainly one of the more unusual tips for knowledge is forgoing the formalities when greeting each other. This is because such rituals get in the way of getting to know each other. People build stronger connections when they do not have to undergo the rituals of formality and instead start conversing and learning right away. By breaking down these barriers, we also bring down those who occupy powerful positions to the level of the people they serve. Conversely, those who may seemingly be at the bottom of life’s standing are raised up and everyone is the same.
The wisdom of the Dalai Lama and his teachings stems from personal experiences and observations that lead to discovering the happiness within you. For those who are looking outward to find the things that will make them happy, it is time to turn inward to discover the happiness that is there.
